Further showcasing the importance of the Indian market to their expansion plans, OnePlus the Chinese smartphone maker which has carved a name for itself by offering seemingly flagship devices on a budget has announced their plans to open an R&D facility in the city of Hyderabad, which would also be their first R&D facility in India.
The company has even laid out an ambitious plan to grow the Hyderabad facility to their largest R&D facility in the world in a span of three years. The facility is said to be built with a focus on the development of machine learning and artificial intelligence related developments for OnePlus’ products.
With devices of current times relying heavily on machine learning and artificial intelligence, applications of which include providing a better-personalized keyboard, enhancement of camera imagery among others, the investment from OnePLus comes at a peak time.
In a release, the company said that “ The facility would help OnePlus leverage the experience and ingenious talent from Hyderabad, one of the biggest IT hubs of the country. The company had even gone to length to elaborate that Hyderabad was chosen as the destination after months of meticulous research from the company’s end.
While discussing the company plans in India, Pete Lau, the CEO of the company said, ”In three years, we plan to grow the new R&D center in Hyderabad into our biggest globally. We plan to refocus our R&D efforts on a large scale and drive innovations in India for the global product, especially on the software side with a special emphasis on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning”.
IN a further release the company has said,” one plus is committed to achieving long-term growth in India, and with the commencement of operations at the new R&D center, OnePLus sees to integrate and delve deeper into the ‘Make in India’ strategy. The center will also contribute to nurturing and giving opportunities to fresh talent as the company initiates the campus hiring program at a number of universities, among which are IIT Mumbai and IIT Delhi”.
