The month of August is here and so is the August Security Patch exclusive for Android devices.
The August Security Patch has been rolled out by Google and it is up to the mobile manufacturers to ship it to their customers. The patch has been released to the Android Open Source Project also and the information for the same has been provided to Android manufacturers up to one month in advance.
Like every other monthly patch fix, this patch also contains fixes for many critical/ severe and medium vulnerabilities.
The most severe vulnerability was of the critical level which, if exploited would have enabled any remote attacker to execute arbitrary code using a specially crafted file in the context of a privileged process.
Framework
Android Framework
Four high severity vulnerabilities have been patched by this month’s security patch. The most severe of these would have enabled any malicious application on the user’s device to gain additional permissions by bypassing user interaction.
Media Framework
Fixes for one critical and two high vulnerabilities affecting the media framework have been released.
System
Seven high and two vulnerabilities in critical severity level affecting the Android system framework have been patched in this month.
Components
Kernel components
Fixing two high severity vulnerabilities, the patch attempts to prevent any local malicious application, in the context of a privileged process execute arbitrary code.
Qualcomm Closed Source components
These 19 high severity and three critical severity vulnerabilities affect Qualcomm components and the fixes are also being provided by Qualcomm and distributed by Google.
Qualcomm components
Four high severity vulnerabilities have been patched, the most severe of these would have enabled any remote information disclosure without the need of any additional execution privileges.
