Essential took a widely different approach last year by introducing it’s first smartphone, the Essential PH-1. Sadly, things didn’t go well for the newcomer and the smartphone lacked in the camera department apart from performance issues inspite of including the latest internals. But when it comes to software updates, Essential has now shown that it is a champ by releasing a timely crucial update.
The PH-1 has already started receiving the January security patch, just a few days after the Google devices. Most importantly, the updates also patches the Spectre and Meltdown vulnerabilities which has been the talk of the tech industry lately.
The update comes with the build number NMJ88C and weighs in at about 66MB. To recollect, many processors including Intel, Qualcomm and even Apple’s A series chipsets are vulnerable to Spectre and Meltdown. Essential is one of the first OEM’s to provide an OTA for the vulnerability.
Speaking about updates, the Android Oreo update is expected to reach the smartphone in the upcoming weeks. Apart from the slew of features Android Oreo brings to the table, Essential is also pushing out Project Treble support via the OTA. This is really impressive as OnePlus had earlier mentioned that Treble support isn’t coming to the 5/5T owing to chances of bricking the handset.
