Biometric is the application of statistical analysis of biological data which is unique to each individual. This data is usually previously collected, and database can be accessed by the collecting body. Biometrics include fingerprints, iris and retina recognition, face recognition, voice recognition and behavioural recognition. Biometrics are being implemented by both small and big ventures. The benefits of using biometrics are it is very hard to fake, convenient, stable and durable, authentication and accountability, non-transferable.
Biometrics are hard to fake because biometric data of each individual is unique. Each person’s fingerprint, eye recognition is different. These biometrics do not change much over a person’s lifetime. Biometrics are also convenient to be used as passwords or person recognition because they are available to people at all times. They’re not required to be remembered like passwords which can be confusing and forgetful. Biometrics are strong passwords which cannot be forgotten or changed. They’re also stable and durable as they do not change much over a person’s lifetime. In case of a missing person, a database with all the persons’ biometrics can be helpful in identifying a missing person regardless of how much time has passed. Also, biometrics are non-transferable, unlike passwords which can be passed onto others leading to misuse of confidential knowledge.
India holds the biggest biometric database called Aadhar also known as Unique Identification (UID). Aadhar is being headed by Nandan Nilekani, the co-founder of Infosys with six other engineers. Now, engineers can join SRM university college with SRM Entrance Exam 2018. It has over 1 billion people’s biometric data like fingerprints and iris recognition. The Indian government has the biometric database of 98% of the Indian population. In India, over half a billion people have no identification (ID), so Aadhar is providing an official ID which enables people to receive government funds, open a bank account, get a loan and get a driver’s license. But there have been a lot of controversy and backlash over the confidentiality and privacy breach of Indian Citizens. This is, due to, Aadhar using a US startup called MongoDB to capture, store and manage the data. Government all over the world is extra sensitive when using US-based intelligence service. India has a lot of engineers from top prestigious engineering colleges like IIT NIIT and Manipal University. Aspiring engineers are required to write JEE main and Manipal Entrance Exam 2018 entrance exams to join these engineering colleges.
Instead of using Intelligence services from United States, graduates from the top engineering colleges can be recruited to work with experienced intelligence service engineers. Instead of outsourcing an entire company from United States, the government can make team of experienced service men and work with one or two leaders from United States. The few cons of biometrics are failure in storage of accurate data, with United States working with Aadhar is very controversy stirring as US has hacked 5 million fingerprints. Processing with biometrics is very expensive. Biometrics may also not be well accepted by people as they consider it invasion of privacy.
