With 2017 bringing in bezel-less displays and 18:9 aspect ratio smartphones, OEM’s are finding it harder to implement fingerprint scanners at the front of the phone. While many big guns like Google and Samsung have decided to go with a rear mounted fingerprint scanner, other manufacturers like Apple have gone in with other alternatives after reportedly failing to implement an embedded scanner into the display.
Recently, we saw a couple of Vivo smartphones flanking an under-the-glass fingerprint scanner and now it looks like Mi is next. It is worthy to note that the sensor only works with OLED display and is dependant on light to work. That said, it is pretty fast and accurate and is expected to get better with time.
In a post on Weibo containing Xiaomi Mi Mix 2s disassembly photos, a user hilariously commented that the feature will make it’s way into the Mi 7 and Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun further commented that it will indeed happen on he Xiaomi Mi 7. Taking into account earlier reports suggesting the same, we think that it will indeed happen this time around.
Talking about the Xiaomi Mi 7, it is expected to come with a 5.6-inch OLED display with minimal bezels and an 18:9 aspect ratio. It will be powered by the Snapdragon 845 SoC coupled with 8GB of RAM and will run on MIUI on top of Android Oreo. Despite such impressive specifications, the Mi 7 will start at $475.
