Samsung Galaxy phones and watches might get much better at mobile payments soon. The Korean manufacturer could start using a new NFC standard that works from four times farther away than current technology.

The NFC Forum recently announced NFC Release 15, which extends communication range from 0.5 centimeters to 2 centimeters. That might not sound like much, but this small change could make your daily life much easier.

Currently, Samsung phones require precise positioning when making contactless payments. You often have to awkwardly adjust your device to find the sweet spot on payment terminals. NFC Release 15 changes this by extending the tap-to-pay range, eliminating the need for millimeter-perfect placement.

If Samsung adopts NFC Release 15 in future Galaxy devices, mobile payments will become much more convenient.

What makes this upgrade special is how it keeps all the security features NFC is known for. The technology still works instantly and protects your payment information. You just don’t have to be as precise when tapping your device.

Samsung hasn’t officially confirmed they’ll use this new standard yet. But given how much the company focuses on making daily tasks easier for users, it seems likely they’ll adopt it. Other phone makers are probably looking at the same upgrade.

The change affects more than just payments. NFC Release 15 could improve how Galaxy devices connect to smart home gadgets, share files with other phones, or pair with accessories. Any task that uses NFC becomes less finicky.

For Samsung Galaxy Watch users, this could be particularly helpful. Watches are harder to position precisely than phones, so the extra range would make payments and connections much smoother.

The timing works out well too. Samsung typically announces new Galaxy devices in the summer, so we might see phones and watches with this technology in their next release cycle.

This upgrade shows how small technical improvements can have big impacts on user experience. Making NFC work from twice as far away doesn’t sound revolutionary, but it removes a daily frustration millions of people deal with.
