Android 8.0 Oreo which is the latest version of Android was released by Google last month in an event held at the Google headquarters. The company at the event also announced that the OTA update for the latest version of Android has already started to roll out to the Pixel and NExus devices. Now, almost all the Google Pixel devices have received the latest update and the Nexus 6p is rumored to be getting the Android 8.0 Oreo update officially next week. Thus, the devices remaining to get the update are non-Nexus and non-Pixel smartphones. We have known that these devices are expected to get the update by the end of this year.
This is because the Android updates take a lot of time to rollout to the devices from other manufacturers because of certifications at various levels for the update. This means it atleast takes 1 month after the update is ready to get certified and be passed to roll out to devices. This also means that the only option for the people who want the latest version of Android is to run custom ROMs for their device. Some of the best alternatives for custom ROMs are LineageOS and others.
Now, we have known that the development of LineageOS 15.0 for some of the devices has already started. There are two devices in particular for whose development to the latest version of Android, Android 8.0 Oreo has already started and this are the OnePlus devices namely OnePlus One and OnePlus 2. Now, we would like you to remind you that both of these devices are confirmed to not get Android Oreo officially by the company so it makes sense that these devices get the update before the officially supported devices and the developer community is hard at work. The development is still in early stage but you should expect the first build to come out really soon.
